The use of combines, tractors and mechanised irrigation systems among other farming machinery might not be all that glamorous today but there was a time they were not always around. There was a time when large farms utilised animals and people to till large tracts of land, something that took way too long.
The widespread availability of agricultural products in both developed and developing countries is a proof of the machine-driven developments that have boosted agriculture into the 21st century therefore freeing up people to do more than just farm. However, helping people free up their time is not all that agricultural mechanisation has done. Here are some of the other advantages that have been witnessed in the agricultural world.
One of the most noticeable advantage is that farm mechanisation saves time. Using machinery in the farms has enabled millions of people around the world to complete certain tasks within a given period of time therefore making the entire process more efficient. In addition, mechanisation substitutes almost all human efforts which allows for the labor to be employed elsewhere in the farm. This also helps in reducing drudgery caused by repetitive tasks.
Mechanisation has also helped reduce the many hazards associated with conventional farming by reducing if not completely eliminating the use of such tools as hoes, cutlass and knives. In the past, it was common to find people nursing deep cuts and wounds caused by using conventional tools. Thankfully, this is no longer the case.
The use of machines has led to increased yields and largely encouraged large scale farming. By using machines, farmers save on what they would have spent on several workers by using a single machine and this eventually evolves into large scale farming activities. A good example is the use of the coil gauge wheels that most farmers have chosen to replace the traditional rubber gauge ones which would get clogged up when they encountered mud, a factor that affected farm yield altogether.
In conclusion, there used to be a huge bone of contention when it comes to replacing manual labor with machinery but the truth is that as time progresses, so should we otherwise, we would still be sending smoke signals.
